Higher Sound Levels in K-12 Classrooms Correlate to Lower Math Achievement Scores

چکیده
Sound levels from occupied classrooms have been gathered 220 across four grade (3, 5, 8 and 11) over six school days each processed with k-means clustering into speech non-speech clusters. Three metrics describing the classroom acoustics, including average daily A-weighted equivalent level for non-speech, difference between (a signal to noise ratio), mid-frequency averaged reverberation time, were analyzed against classroom-aggregated standardized reading math achievement test scores, while controlling demographics socioeconomic status. Interactions also tested. A statistically significant relationship was found in scores; higher correlated lower scores ( p < 0.05). No main effects of acoustic on achievement. There some differences an interaction grades, but these may be due uneven sample distributions as there fewer 11 measured. Children learn classrooms, findings this investigation based data conditions suggest that designing unoccupied sound can lead environments are conducive better student learning outcomes.

Scientific and Engineering Practices in K – 12 Classrooms Understanding A Framework for K – 12 Science Education
This morning I watched Sesame Street. During the show, characters “acted like engineers” and designed a boat so a rock could float. In another segment, children asked questions and made predictions about the best design for a simple car. They then built a model car and completed an investigation to determine which design worked best when the cars went down inclined planes. Children also learned...
متن کاملFostering Metacognition in K-12 Classrooms: Recommendations for Practice
This article makes the case for why it is important for educators to intentionally foster students’ metacognition. Metacognition is often defined as thinking about thinking, but it is more complete to describe it as including knowledge, awareness, and control of one’s own cognition and human cognition in general. Two primary components of metacognition, knowledge of cognition and regulation of ...
متن کاملDesigning Classrooms to Maximize Student Achievement
Improving student achievement is vital for our nation’s competitiveness. Scientific research shows how the physical classroom environment influences student achievement. Two findings are key: First, the building’s structural facilities profoundly influence learning. Inadequate lighting, noise, low air quality, and deficient heating in the classroom are significantly related to worse student ach...

Visual sustained attention and numerosity sensitivity correlate with math achievement in children.
In this study, we investigated in school-age children the relationship among mathematical performance, the perception of numerosity (discrimination and mapping to number line), and sustained visual attention. The results (on 68 children between 8 and 11 years of age) show that attention and numerosity perception predict math scores but not reading performance. Even after controlling for several...
